Livre Blanc Innovation et Réseaux Sociaux /Libro Blanco sobre Innovación y redes sociales. | Business Improvement and Social media | Scoop.it

The 4 Types of Innovation and the Problems They Solve

The 4 Types of Innovation and the Problems They Solve | Business Improvement and Social media | Scoop.it
In researching my book, Mapping Innovation, I found that every innovation strategy fails eventually, because innovation is, at its core, about solving problems — and there are as many ways to innovate as there are types of problems to solve. There is no one “true” path to innovation.

Yet all too often, organizations act as if there is. They lock themselves into one type of strategy and say, “This is how we innovate.” It works for a while, but eventually it catches up with them. They find themselves locked into a set of solutions that don’t fit the problems they need to solve. Essentially, they become square-peg companies in a round-hole world and lose relevance.

We need to start treating innovation like other business disciplines — as a set of tools that are designed to accomplish specific objectives. Just as we wouldn’t rely on a single marketing tactic or a single source of financing for the entire life of an organization, we need to build up a portfolio of innovation strategies designed for specific tasks.

It was with this in mind that I created the Innovation Matrix to help leaders identify the right type of strategy to solve a problem, by asking two questions: How well can we define the problem? and How well can we define the skill domain(s) needed to solve it?

Resilience, Johnson Controls, and the Spirit of Innovation | Business Improvement and Social media | Scoop.it
Those of us who work in the tech sector get excited about new innovations every day. It’s part of why it’s such a fun industry to work in. But the success of Johnson Controls tells us something important about the key to a long life in the tech sector. What matters is not technology by itself, but what technology can do for people.

Research: Family Firms Are More Innovative Than Other Companies

The findings, published in the Academy of Management Journal, show that family firms invest less in innovation than other firms (both public and private) that aren’t family-owned. On average, family firms have a smaller R&D budget than other organizations of similar size, but that does not mean they are less innovative. On the contrary, our study found that family firms are more efficient in their innovation processes. For every dollar invested in R&D, they get more innovative output, measured by number of patents, number of new products, or revenues generated with new products. The level of innovation is higher in family firms.

Design thinking as a strategy: How understanding innovation creates innovation

Design thinking as a strategy: How understanding innovation creates innovation | Business Improvement and Social media | Scoop.it
Business strategies – especially in the tradition sense – are rather pushy. If you have a product, your strategy is to explain why a customer should use it.

Design thinking as a strategy flips this. Instead of forcing a product on customers, instead, it sees things from the customer’s perspective. A design mindset is not problem-focused, it is solution focused and action-oriented towards creating a preferred future. Design Thinking draws upon logic, imagination, intuition, and systemic reasoning – exploring the possibilities of what could be. This train of thought creates desired outcomes benefiting the end user.

When design principles are applied to strategy and innovation the success rate for innovation dramatically improves.

So important to allow ideation and creativity to permeate the learning process. So import to have this design thinking process which inherently connects the designer much more closely with the work and task being undertaken.

In the age of digital innovation and transformation, small companies have burst out of the gate to disrupt traditional busines

I selected this article from Curatti written by Daniel Newman because it discusses how both innovation and speed can lead to business success.

Grow your business with technology while adapting quickly to change.

How Innovation Can Propel Your Company

Small businesses can grow faster than large corporations simply by engaging in the latest technologies and responding to a changing market. I agree that in order to expedite your growth your company should stay ahead of the competition through adaptation and innovation.

Newman explains how to cultivate forward thinking and take advantage of the latest trends.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • Small companies can have an advantage over large corporations by being able to change direction quickly. As a result they can formulate new business models in order to move ahead quickly.

  • Make creativity a building block in your business. Encourage new ideas and offer availability to new technologies.

  • People love to support smaller businesses over large companies. This will continue to challenge corporations to do better in appealing to consumers.

This blog post is the second part in a series that shares our reflections on building an experimental culture in governments - see Exploring the unobvious: An overview for an introduction. In our previous post, we discussed how governments tend to explore only a small, fairly predictable subset of solutions. We argued that they need to get outside their comfort zone and explore the unobvious to develop better outcomes. So how do you go about exploring this space of the unobvious?

The good news is that there are multiple ways to explore and develop unobvious solutions to the problems that governments are facing. The methods mentioned below (read this post for a more in-depth look at this diagram) are all contributing, in different ways and at various phases of the development process, to building new understanding and creation of solutions.

How to Use Innovation to Fuel Your Small Business

How to Use Innovation to Fuel Your Small Business | Business Improvement and Social media | Scoop.it

One of the keys to any successful business, regardless of its size, is innovation. Developing new ideas is the fuel which will keep your business up to date. Innovation will keep operations, products, and services fresh. Adding this fuel will make your business more competitive.

According to a study from PwC, an overwhelming 93 percent of business executives believe that “organic growth through innovation will drive the greater proportion of their revenue growth.”

But, what exactly is innovation? The answer to this question can and will vary depending on your industry or market.

I selected this article from Curatti written by Greg Satell because it provides insights on how industries are affected by innovation and technology.

Understanding the affect of innovation and the Internet of things in business.

How Technology Has Changed Companies

We are experiencing new technological changes like never before in Internet history. I agree that we need to understand this affect for our own business productivity.

Satell explains the various changes in technology, and which industries have been affected.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • Agriculture is greatly impacted by innovation. Ecology is now data driven, which directly affects our water systems. This sector is now partnering with big tech companies like IBM.

  • Digital connectivity continues to transform physical machines. The age of the computer has evolved instead of gone away.

  • Water is the new oil because of technological advances. This means that we can be more efficient commercially and that is good news for politics.
