In the last year internet users reduced the time they spent online, focusing on quality over quantity. However, social media’s influence on how we live our lives continues to grow, from shopping to connecting, entertaining to looking for information about brands. People now spend more than 2½ hours on social media each day – 40 minutes more than watching broadcast and cable TV.

Twitter feed getting a little congested? Muting tweets may be the solution to resolve this! | Business Improvement and Social media | Scoop.it
There may be times when you see content coming up in your feed that you are just not interested in and given the choice you’d prefer not to see! It could be that your timeline is suddenly full of tweets because there is a football cup final going on, it’s Eurovision time or because a new Wordle game gets popular and people like to share their daily results. We all have different interests and that’s fine, but it doesn’t mean you have to see these tweets! If this is happening to you then muting could be the answer!

As the old saying goes “Every day’s a learning day’.  Social Media including Twitter seems to be always changing things. Whilst introducing new features in the main can be useful, they sometimes pass you by.  For me it was saving a draft of a Tweet. How did I miss that?! This post highlights some tips that I hope you will find useful. For keyboard shortcut fans there are a list of commands towards the end of the post.

Is social media bad for you? The evidence and the unknowns

Is social media bad for you? The evidence and the unknowns | Business Improvement and Social media | Scoop.it
Three billion people, around 40% of the world’s population, use online social media – and we’re spending an average of two hours every day sharing, liking, tweeting and updating on these platforms, according to some reports. That breaks down to around half a million tweets and Snapchat photos shared every minute. With social media playing such a big part in our lives, could we be sacrificing our mental health and well-being as well as our time? What does the evidence actually suggest?

Stephen's Web ~ Does Avoiding Social Media Limit An Alt-Ac Career?

Stephen's Web ~ Does Avoiding Social Media Limit An Alt-Ac Career? | Business Improvement and Social media | Scoop.it
The short answer to this is "no". I work in a building full of academics who are not university professors and who are almost invisible on social media in any professional sense. I know hundreds of others in other government, corporate and private research facilities. Their careers are doing just fine. Joshua Kim argues that social media is pretty essential, though. "Alternative academics, lacking many of the traditional disciplinary-based assets that bind traditional academics (journals, conferences, professional organizations etc.), have seemingly adopted social media our medium of communication, collaboration, and exchange." The key word here is seemingly. You can't judge the world by what you see on Twitter. You just can't. Image: University Affairs.

Digital 2021 October Global Statshot Report – published in partnership with We Are Social and Hootsuite – is packed with impressive milestones.

Oskar Almazan's curator insight, October 22, 2021 10:24 AM
The ‘state of digital’ in October 2021 Let’s start with a look at the essential headlines for digital use around the world today: More than two-thirds of the world’s population uses a mobile phone today, with global users increasing by almost 100 million (+1.9 percent) over the past 12 months to reach 5.29 billion in October 2021. There are now 4.88 billion internet users around the world, which equates to almost 62 percent of the world’s population. The latest data show that global internet user numbers have increased by more than 220 million (+4.8 percent) over the past year, but with COVID-19 continuing to hamper research, the real figure may be considerably higher. Social media users increased by more than 400 million (+9.9 percent) over the past 12 months to reach 4.55 billion in October 2021. User growth has slowed slightly over the past 3 months, but the global total continues to increase at a rate of more than 1 million new users every single day. For context, the world’s population reached 7.89 billion at the start of October 2021, representing an increase of roughly 80 million people (+1 percent) compared with this time last year. Current growth rates indicate that the global population will exceed 8 billion by mid-2023.

If you work in social media, explaining your job can be a frustrating experience - especially to family members who probably assume that you just use Facebook all day.

For Community Managers, in particular, there tends to be a lot of confusion over exactly what the role entails.

To clear things up, I thought I’d delve into the world of community management and find out why it’s becoming increasingly important for brands of all kinds.

Here’s a beginner’s guide.

What does a community manager do?

The role of a community manager is to act as the bridge between a brand and the community it is aiming to create (i.e. a loyal audience or group of core consumers connected by a similar interest).

They should be the brand’s ambassador, engaging with potential customers and building relationships with existing ones. They are also focused on gauging sentiment around the brand, using social listening tools in order to monitor feedback and engagement.

Dispelling Digital Marketing Myths

Effective marketing is not difficult -- it just takes a specific strategy. I agree that in order to best reach your audience you need to know what works and what does not.

Brenner explains what digital marketing means to your business and how to make it successful.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • It's good practice to consistently produce great content. Articles need to be quality, and grab the reader's attention.

  • A negative reaction online isn't always a bad thing to happen. Avoid trolls, but engage with those who are your loyal audience.

  • Digital marketing encompasses many different mediums from blogs to email, and more. Be sure your content in these places is relevant to your target market.

In order to stay ahead of the competition it's important to effectively reach your target market.

As you grow your audience on social media you will want to build trusted relationships with them. I agree that in order to attract new customers you need to focus on approaching your audience in an authentic way.

Gilbert explains how to best approach your social media marketing in a non-sales way.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • Engage on Facebook -- especially in groups. This is still one the top places to build your brand and a community. Once you establish relationships there you can lead them to your Page.

  • On Twitter take advantage of trending hashtags and engage in live chats and contests. There is still a viable audience who is interested in what your brand has to offer there.

  • Get active with mobile marketing and start posting and engaging. Include SMS text messaging or push notifications as a part of this strategy.
