The Power Of #Storytelling From John Kotter

The Power Of #Storytelling From John Kotter | Business Improvement and Social media | Scoop.it
There’s enough evidence today that the brain is hardwired for stories and by that I mean that they can easily slide into our minds with a bit of emotional punch that keeps them memorable and ‘sticky.’ If the story holds some basic lessons, then they have a chance of staying around over time and modifying what we do: changing actions, reinforcing behaviors, making us do what we do (or need to stop doing) with more confidence.

I recently attended the Association For Talent Development (ATD) convention in Denver. To say the least, it is a marvelous convention for business trainers, professional speakers, and workshop moderators. I was especially impressed with the fact that there were 14 talks given on how to use storytelling as a presentation tool for management, sales, training and recruiting. However, from what I was able to discern, the primary purpose behind many of these talks was to promote storytelling’s ability to entertain an audience.

'Go on. Storify Me.... If You're Hard Enough!'

'Go on. Storify Me.... If You're Hard Enough!' | Business Improvement and Social media | Scoop.it
There are two camps of people that we teach storytelling to.  Most people sit somewhere in the middle so these 'camps' relate to archetypes, rather than  individuals. The first camp: Story Enthusiasts
Ricard Lloria's insight:

Everyone loves to tell stories don't they? No. They don't. It can be frightening like any other 'art' as Claire Taylor demonstrates in this wonderful article about 'story enthusiasts' and 'story resisters'. It's a great reminder about considering people's fears and vulnerabilities when asking them to tell stories or develop the skill.

Of course it's worth it when you get to the other side but being up for connecting with others in such a powerful way is a pretty important place to start.

New Twist On The Neuroscience of #Storytelling

Stories are told in the body. It doesn’t seem that way. We tend to think of stories as emerging from consciousness—from dreams or fantasies—and traveling through words or images to other minds. We see them outside of us, on paper or on screen, never under the skin.

"This raises the question: is it exploitative for someone to become popular at the hands of sometimes-marginalized groups? I will touch upon Stanton’s systems of compensation and charity, but that does not take away from the general unsettling nature of sharing one’s stories, particularly for marginalized individuals, and not having a direct, uniform source of tangible compensation for every person."
