Alexis Holwerda's curator insight,

In rural China, bureaucrats who enforce the one child policy, are instituting important learning systems for rural children. Research shows that the first 1000 days are the most important for cognitive skills in a child's life. In rural China, kids are not getting the education they need at an early age to be able to make it through high school.
This is especially important to the international community. These children are China's future. If they are getting the education they need, then the politicians in China will have more of an insight to the whole country, not just the bureaucratic lifestyle. The children who are now receiving the proper education have the ability to hold China's political and economic future in their hands.
To me, the REAP (rural education action program) is doing something amazing. These children never would have had a chance to make a difference before, due to being cognitively stunted from lack of early education. It is very important they get the opportunities they need so they can make a difference in the world when they are older, and be able to achieve their dreams.

This article does a good job outlining the current problem with higher education in America. The colleges have a monopoly on credentials which, as the author says, allows them to raise tuition every year. The author writes about some of the alternative systems that are trying to establish themselves right now.
