All students are unique. They learn in different ways, at different paces, and have different interests. Each has potential waiting to be unlocked, so that they may excel and achieve their personal best. K12 educators are making bold curriculum moves to address the unique needs of every student. Personalized learning solutions for ELA and math empower school leaders and educators with the ability to address these unique needs, while still charting a course toward standards mastery. Educational experiences are dynamically individualized to ensure each student remains challenged, engaged, and supported along their learning path.

My Transformation as a Teacher

My Transformation as a Teacher | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it
Pernille Ripp, 7th grade teacher in WI, shares her transformation and pathways to personalized learning environments and passionate learners.

Via Kathleen McClaskey
Kathleen McClaskey's curator insight, January 25, 2016 12:00 PM

Pernille offers insight on why she embraces personalized learning after 6 years.  She points out that the journey she has taken to transform herself is really about the learners that she teaches. Here is an excerpt that says it all.

"Six years ago, I set out on a journey that would challenge my belief that education was an institution that could not be changed, but instead had to be blindly followed no matter the collateral damage in its wake. I now know that the day I started asking my learners what changes they needed to become more engaged learners, was the day that I made a difference in the way education can be used. Yet this change is fundamentally not about me. It is about the learners I teach and it is for them that we must embrace a more meaningful way of educating. Call it personalizing learning or some other title, but in the end, we must make the very education that we are stewards of become about the kids that we teach again."

Discover how Cathy Knutson took Genius Hour and had her learners create Query Books.  How ingenious! She makes reference to two resources, Where Good Ideas Come From and What Do you do with an Idea to help her bring her idea to life. Here are her comments about the process her learners took to develop Query Books.

"As students record their ideas, several things happen. They are giving their ideas a voice, recording them so they will be remembered, and building the habit of paying attention to their ponderings. Each query book would act as a personalized idea "bucket list" of sorts. As they collected and cultivated ideas over time, they would no doubt find that some have more merit than others (a truth that all great minds must accept). Although not every idea is born for greatness, each would help students become more creative thinkers."

Both of us are advocates for the use of technology to support instruction and to help learners gain independent learning skills. For years, as coaches consulting on technology integration, we observed classrooms where technology sat idle or to present lessons using new tools but the same way they teach: teacher-directed. The current system seems to encourage the use of technology for traditional teacher-directed methods.

The system needs to change from focusing on problems to rethinking the design of teaching and learning around how learners learn best. Personalized learning starts with the learner, not the technology!

Scaling Personalized Learning

Scaling Personalized Learning | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it

Jesse Moyer, Manager of Strategic Initiatives at KnowledgeWorks wrote a post on how to reach a level of scale that provides personalized learning for all learners.

Via Kathleen McClaskey
Kathleen McClaskey's curator insight, February 26, 2015 2:16 PM

Jesse Moyer shared his research on scaling personalized learning from the recent KnowledgeWorks paper, District Conditions for Scale, that he co-authored.  Here is some of his reflections about the importance of meta-themes and the ten conditions to scale personalized learning.

"While the conditions themselves are extremely important, it is the meta-themes that serve as the connective tissues of the conditions and are the reason that a district must implement each of the ten conditions in order to successfully scale practices to improve teaching, learning, and student achievement.

Vision
The district’s vision should include the guiding principles on which each decision a district makes should be based.  Each of the conditions should be aligned to the district’s vision for teaching and learning.

Culture
The vision clearly informs the culture each district is trying to create.  A strong culture will encourage risk-taking among district and school leaders and teachers while enabling innovation at every level of the district.

Transparency
Transparency allows everyone in the district, from board members to community partners to parents and students, to take chances without fear of failure.  By encouraging transparency, everyone in the district is better able to make decisions based on the best interests of the students."
