This is a quick view of Project Based Learning that may help your students (or teachers in your school new to PBL) understand the key components: * Driving question or challenge * Need to know * Inquiry and innovation * 21st century skills * Student voice and choice * Feedback and revision * Publicly presented product Project Based Learning is a great way for students to engage in authentic learning projects. For more information on Project Based Learning (and lots of great resources) check out the Buck Institute for Learning website located at http://bie.org/ They have been around for over 25 years and recently revamped their website.

Project based learning and problem based learning are two didactic approaches to learning that are often used interchangeably to refer to the same thing: engaging students in authentic learning activities. This truism does not always hold true. In a learning task that is problem based, the focus is on finding solutions to the problem posed through applying learned strategies and in so doing the process of arriving at the solution is, in and of itself, an integral part of the overall learning taking place . Whether a learning activity is authentic or not does not really matter from a problem based learning perspective because often times 'fictitious scenarios' are purposefully designed to provide learners with a contrived environment to work on their ill-structured problems. Project-Based Learning is a 21st century approach to learning that acts both as a curriculum and instruction tool, as well as a new way for students to think about school. Rather than strictly academic lessons and units, real-world problems can be solved, and students gain experience with long-term management of the learning process, and the possibility of self-direction. Project-Based Learning allows naturally embedding of “school” in authentic environments whether those are digital or physical. It is a way of learning that is as much about the process as the project, allowing for the seamless integration of technology, and the inclusion of digital and social media to solve relevant personal and social challenges.
