While this is nothing new to most educators, I did like the way that it stressed relationships over all else.  In the time of COVID, this has become a priority.  Good teachers have always known that connecting to your students is important.  The challenge is how to do that when you don't "see" them in person every day as you can't judge as easily when things are off or something is obviously troubling a student.

"No significant learning can occur without a significant relationship." This is the basis of the article which covers several very applicable roles the teacher must play within the first week of school in order to create a successful year for students. I especially love Wormeli's ideas to "change the current reality" to allow students success and the boost they may need to continue on.

Absolutely true!  Relationships are critical for engaging students. My own research has shown this to me and as Rita Pierson famously said, They won't care about learning until they know that you care.

Well worth a read. While aimed at K-12 teachers, there is much that is useful for higher ed.
