Why Ages 2-7 Matter So Much for Brain Development - Edutopia

Why Ages 2-7 Matter So Much for Brain Development - Edutopia | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it
Children’s brains develop in spurts called critical periods. The first occurs around age 2, with a second one occurring during adolescence. At the start of these periods, the number of connections (synapses) between brain cells (neurons) doubles. Two-year-olds have twice as many synapses as adults. Because these connections between brain cells are where learning occurs, twice as many synapses enable the brain to learn faster than at any other time of life. Therefore, children’s experiences in this phase have lasting effects on their development.

The Future is Bright for the Mobile App Industry [Infographic]

The Future is Bright for the Mobile App Industry [Infographic] | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it

Yesterday we shared Gartner's list of the top mobile application developers. The list ranks the providers Gartner feels are best at enabling IT developers to create mobile applications for customers, partners and employees.

But what, you may be wondering, does the future hold for mobile app development? Relax — we've got you covered. Or actually, our friends at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Collat School of Business have you covered.

The team there just created an infographic that explains trends in mobile app development.

We're All on Our Smartphones

More than 91 percent of the US population has a cell phone — and six in 10 of those are smartphones. With more than 10 billion mobile Internet devices expected to be in use by 2016, the mobile application industry will grow tremendously to match demand and keep up with ever-evolving technologies, the UAB team predicts.

Right now, developers have a strong focus on apps in the areas of social networking, context-aware marketing, location-based services,  mobile search, mobile commerce, object recognition and mobile payment systems.

Small Business owners often ask me "is there a future for mobile apps, should I be thinking about this as soon as it becomes an affordable option for a small biz?" ~ I actually have found an affordable way for a small biz to have an app pf their very own!

Global Multidimensional Poverty Index

Global Multidimensional Poverty Index | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it

"The global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) is an international measure of acute poverty covering over 100 developing countries. It complements traditional income-based poverty measures by capturing the severe deprivations that each person faces at the same time with respect to education, health and living standards."

The MPI was developed out of a desire to fill some of the gaps in the HDI's applicability and utility.  Allow me to quote the editor of one the NCGE's journals, the Geography Teacher, on the usefulness of the MPI website for classroom use: "With the infographics, maps, graphs, country briefings, and case studies, you have a ready-made lesson activities to demonstrate patterns of fertility, mortality, and health for a population unit, and access to health care, education, utilities, and sanitation for an Industrialization and Economic Development Unit. Connections can also be made to malnutrition and water, as well as to key concepts such as pattern and scale, to key geographical skills such as how to use and think about maps and geospatial data, and to the use of online maps and online data."  Also, this article from the World Bank also give a run-down on the key findings of the MPI in 2014.

Designing Higher Ed: The Search for a Process to Innovate (EdSurge News) | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it

If you’ve been hearing a lot lately about design, there’s a good reason. Design as a discipline has found a full seat at the table of private enterprise as a driver of business value and competitive edge. Recent mergers and acquisitions activity underscores the growing recognition of the critical role of design in innovation, strategy, and business development. Although 42 design firms have been acquired over the past decade, nearly half of the acquisitions happened in the past year (2015), according to the Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers influential Design In Tech Report 2016.

MOOCs Revolutionize Corporate Learning and Development

MOOCs Revolutionize Corporate Learning and Development | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it

McAfee turned its training around that both saved both time and produced more lucrative sales: ...an average of $500,000 per year in sales [attributed to] new training model.

Before Intel giant McAfee revamped its new-hire orientation, ...80 hours long [with] ... 40 hours of pre-work,, 5 days of on-site training, and ...post-...to be completed at home.

To fix its problem, McAfee turned to ....Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs...called “flipping the classroom” [where]...a majority of learning happens ...by giving students access to course materials and having them probe, discuss, and debate issues with fellow learners as well as the professor.

...Can your company re-imagine the role of the learner? ...the learner takes on a role more expansive than ever before, acting as teacher, learner, and peer reviewer.

Companies ...have to trust the learner to do this,  by incorporating more opportunities for peer reviews and peer-to-peer dialogues into the course.

With that change, McAfee turned its training around in a way that both saved both time and produced more lucrative sales: its sales associates now attribute an average of $500,000 per year in sales to the skills they learned through the new training model.

Three MOOC elements are particularly well-suited to corporate learning & development:  Semi-synchronicity  (cohorts ...[can] motivate each other as they go through the program),  course design (flipping the classroom), and credentials

In a recent Future Workplace survey, completed by 195 corporate learning and HR professionals, 70 percent of respondents said they saw opportunities to integrate MOOCs into their own company’s learning programs. Even further, this sample of respondents made six recommendations for how MOOC providers could adapt to needs of corporations:
