Empowering Students to Design the Change They Want to See in the World

Empowering Students to Design the Change They Want to See in the World | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it
The answer to empowering our learners by giving them purpose and inspiring their passion may be right under our noses. In play, one group of children may use dozens of LEGO pieces to recreate the excavator they found fascinating on their neighborhood walk, while another group of students uses Minecraft to create a fireworks display in honor of the Chinese New Year. Taken together, students learn the science and engineering behind simple machines or the importance of cultural practices in social studies, while learning how to collaborate with others and create something better together. In each instance, students use elements of design thinking to cocreate and problem solve, engaging in thoughtful dialogue and continuous iteration. This play can be made into so much more if educators guide students by demonstrating the utility of the content they're learning and inviting students into the process of meaning making.

Gigaom | Are There Robot-Proof Jobs? | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it
The following is an excerpt from GigaOm publisher Byron Reese’s new book, The Fourth Age: Smart Robots, Conscious Computers, and the Future of Humanity. You can purchase the book here.

The Fourth Age explores the implications of automation and AI on humanity, and has been described by Ethernet inventor and 3Com founder Bob Metcalfe as framing “the deepest questions of our time in clear language that invites the reader to make their own choices. Using 100,000 years of human history as his guide, he explores the issues around artificial general intelligence, robots, consciousness, automation, the end of work, abundance, and immortality.”

One of those deep questions of our time:

When the topic of automation and AI comes up, one of the chief concerns is always technology’s potential impact on jobs. Many fear that with the introduction of wide-scale automation, there will be no more jobs left for humans. But is it really that dire? In this excerpt from The Fourth Age, Byron Reese considers if there are jobs that will never be automated.

The hidden dangers of technology.
Camila Ossa Castaño's curator insight, December 4, 2016 4:25 PM
Nowadays technology is a great tool that helps us in our life, in our work, in our study, etc. The internet is part of our lives and is very beneficial to us. As future teachers, we must show and tell our students all the benefits and advantages that the internet brings to our lives, but we must also make them aware that this if not used in a correct way can be dangerous for them. It is important to read and take into account these three ways to protect our students from the dangers of technology, because they often do not think about the consequences that can bring to their lives the content that they upload to the internet.  We need to make sure that our students get the most out of technology.

What is Four-Dimensional Education?

What is Four-Dimensional Education? | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it
According to Center for Curriculum Redesign (CCR) founder Charles Fadel, education is “falling behind its mission to prepare students for the future: a world that’s increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous.” Curriculum was significantly redesigned in the late 1800’s when societal and human capital needs demanded it. But the 21st century bears little resemblance to the past. WHAT should we teach young people in an age where Dr. Google has an answer for everything? Humans are living longer; the traditional professions disappear while new ones are created; international mobility is drastically increasing population diversity; terrorism, environmental threats and inequality need our collective attention; and robots and gene editing are coming, requiring us to re-examine the very core of what it means to be human. WHAT does all that we know now, and all that we still can only imagine, mean for Curriculum?

“...let’s not waste new beginnings.”
R - Overall, the OECD has a good reputation of being reliable and showing accurate facts. The author, Marie-Hélène Doumet, also doesn’t seem to have a troubling reputation.
A - This article, published by the OECD, is heavily based on statistics and their own percentages. Because of this, the author could simply just be reporting about an issue and did not experience anything first hand.
V - At the end of the day, this author will be paid by her boss no matter what. Thus, there is vested interest because the writer will be receiving a form of payment by writing and publishing this article.
E - Marie-Hélène Doumet is the Senior Analyst and the OECD Directorate for Education and Skills. Because this article is mostly made up of statistics and percentages, her being the Senior Analyst makes her qualified to write an article written like this one.
N - I think Doumet was successfully able to remain neutral and explicitly just state facts and logical conclusions from those facts. Some of the topics, such as women being more likely to complete tertiary education than men, could be perceived as biased since she herself is a woman, but she quickly stated facts and showed percentages that support her claim.
