El Think Tank Gold Mercury, en colaboración la sede inglesa de la iniciativa Sillicon Valley de Reino Unido, lanzan una nueva publicación gratuita y online acerca del impacto y el futuro del e-learning desde una doble perspectiva; por un lado, como generador de nueva línea de mercado, producción, conocimiento y crecimiento económico, y por otro lado, como solución universal para la alfabetización, la escolarización mundial y el acceso a contenidos educativos de calidad en los países donde el acceso a la educación postobligatorio o universitaria es aún una utopía. La publicación con forma de magazine hace un barrido por las principales plataformas que facilitan la interacción online con propósitos educativos que van desde redes sencillas como edmodo a MOOCs de las universidades más prestigiosas pasando por las iniciativas de análisi de big data y algoritmos de aprendizaje. En sus conclusiones, existe un momento trepidante en la generación de herramientas pero es necesario dotarlas de sentido y signifcado en cada institución y con cada objetivo para poder desarrollar al máximo todo su potencial. Tenemos las herramientas tecnológicas necesarias para revolucionar la educación con tecnología, ahora solo nos queda encontrar el proyecto y la realidad donde pueden cumplir su función con ejemplos croncretos de éxito.

INTRODUCING STREAMTOOLS: A GRAPHICAL TOOL FOR WORKING WITH STREAMS OF DATA

New and open source from the New York Times R&D Lab.

We see a moment coming when the collection of endless streams of data is commonplace. As this transition accelerates it is becoming increasingly apparent that our existing toolset for dealing with streams of data is lacking. Over the last 20 years we have invested heavily in tools that deal with tabulated data, from Excel, MySQL, and MATLAB to Hadoop, R, and Python+Numpy. These tools, when faced with a stream of never-ending data, fall short and diminish our creative potential.

In response to this shortfall we have created streamtools—a new, open source project by the New York Times R&D Lab which provides a general purpose, graphical tool for dealing with streams of data. It offers a vocabulary of operations that can be connected together to create live data processing systems without the need for programming or complicated infrastructure. These systems are assembled using a visual interface that affords both immediate understanding and live manipulation of the system.
