Newsletter Curation: Top 6 Tools and Tips To Curate Your Own Weekly Newsletter

Newsletter Curation: Top 6 Tools and Tips To Curate Your Own Weekly Newsletter | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it

Given the amount of news, stories, tools, events and services that are being announced on a daily basis it is very difficult for anyone to resist the time-saving benefits of subscribing to a newsletter that finds and collects the most relevant items in the specific topic area he is interested into.

If you are a subject-matter expert, a coach, trainer or consultant, you need to monitor and track your field of interest anyhow, and if you learn to put aside, organise and properly collect the good gems you find during your scouting time, you can provide a really useful service to your readers and followers.

Furthermore there is no lack of tools web services that can help you carry out this task without needing to learn new or difficult skills.

Here are my personal six tips of advice and my favorite top six tools you need to check out, if you ever decide to start curating your own weekly newsletter:

Tips

a. Limit the number of curated items. Less is more. Three is plenty. Five is a lot.

b. Provide concise but useful, tangible info.

c. Offer always as much context as possible. Why you are presenting this info. Who can use it, for what purpose.

d. Find a thread and follow it. Have a strong focus. Don't mix too many different things without a clear focus or direction.

e. Add your own voice. Make it heard. Comment. Express opinions. Take a stand.

f. Be timely and consistent. Choose a day and time and respect it.

Tools

8 Steps To Great Digital Storytelling - Edudemic

8 Steps To Great Digital Storytelling - Edudemic | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it

"Stories bring us together, encourage us to understand and empathize, and help us to communicate. Long before paper and books were common and affordable, information passed from generation to generation through this oral tradition of storytelling. Consider Digital Storytelling as the 21st Century version of the age-old art of storytelling with a twist: digital tools now make it possible for anyone to create a story and share it with the world."

6 Best Practices For Visual Content Marketing | Visually Blog

6 Best Practices For Visual Content Marketing | Visually Blog | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it
Become storytellers: Modern marketing is less about selling and more about creating brand experiences fueled by brand storytelling. You only have about eight seconds to catch consumers’ attention. To make those seconds count, thoroughly investigate your customers.

Some ways to do this: Start with exhaustive persona profiles to build buyer paths from high-level awareness down to purchase so that you’re creating the right types of offers to deliver the appropriate content at every stage of the buying process.

Persona research should include: raw data (surveys, internal sales, and analytics data), interviews with sales and support teams, and discussions with or polls sent to existing customers. Add Interest to Email. Despite news of its demise, email is still a marketing workhorse.

However, businesses must stop the “spray and pray” method in lieu of incorporating smarter strategies driven by automation to get the most out of the medium. Ways to standout in... keep reading

We’ve shared other infographics on the elements of viral content and I’m always hesitant at pushing viral as a strategy. Viral content can bring brand awareness – we see that often with videos.

Via Brian Yanish - MarketingHits.com, Beth Kanter
Beth Kanter's curator insight, July 8, 2014 10:23 AM

Very useful infographic summarizing the problems with content that isn't being shared and how to solve that problem.  I like the good practical tips for creating more "emotionally charged" content.   The other main points:

  • Lack of emotional appeal – people share content that generates curiosity, amazement, interest, astonishment, uncertainty, admiration and humor.
  • Not “Share Worthy” – people want to share it, it’s easy to share, it provides value, and it’s going to draw attention to those who share it.
  • Bad Timing – find the times of the day, week, season or event that the content is in demand and popular.
  • Poor Design – the layout, colors and visual appeal matters when it comes to sharable content. An investment in design is an investment in the likelihood it will be shared.
  • Poor Distribution – this is probably the one we see least deployed… distribute and promote your content across sites where it’s going to reach a large audience.

Nowadays technology is a great tool that helps us in our life, in our work, in our study, etc. The internet is part of our lives and is very beneficial to us. As future teachers, we must show and tell our students all the benefits and advantages that the internet brings to our lives, but we must also make them aware that this if not used in a correct way can be dangerous for them. It is important to read and take into account these three ways to protect our students from the dangers of technology, because they often do not think about the consequences that can bring to their lives the content that they upload to the internet.  We need to make sure that our students get the most out of technology.

Academic Digital Etiquette: Interacting in online spaces

Academic Digital Etiquette: Interacting in online spaces | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it

Celia's reflections:

"I have had many discussions with students about the protocols on interacting in online spaces in an academic or professional manner. Whether they be commenting on a blog or giving feedback in comments on a Google document or interacting in Edmodo or Google Classroom, students need to be modelled the ‘professional’ way to behave. Commenting within an academic context is in fact providing feedback and as such quite a complicated skill for a young student."

A quick read with useful reminders. My favorite is below. We often had tense debates in our staff meetings about failure being final in our gradebooks.

"Games are about mastering skills and players are typically allowed to keep trying until they are successful.

Recording failure into the gradebook can stifle risk taking...Allowing students to keep trying until they are successful can help them to try things they would not have otherwise tried."

Alex Enkerli's curator insight, December 3, 2014 5:48 PM

A neat part of this list is that it isn’t really about gamification or serious games though it can bring insight to both.

Scenttrail
4. Curate Simple (i.e. not mean) controversy.
5. Curate Social Content.
6. Tap Branded Content (manufacturers or gurus).

7. Polls and Surveys.
8. Guest Posts.
9. Ambassadors.
10. Test for Engagement with new KPIs

Controversy
When Moon-Audio.com ask their customers Fostex or Audese? They got headphone lovers to weigh in on what they like about their favorite brands and why. This kind of simple controversy is great for creating online community since it doesn't destroy the "we are in this together" feeling.

Curate
When site sponsors and owners use THEIR content (User Generated Content) that action says, "We listen" more clearly than words. Follow those who follow you on social media and curate their content into your streams, websites and blogs with permission and attribution to increase engagement. Nothing like using what they've shared in a material way to prove the value you place in sharing.

Tap Branded Content
When you use a Seth Godin riff or TED talk you increase authority and authority helps promote engagement.

Polls & Surveys
When in doubt ASK and publish results. We are bench mark seeking machines we humans so always share results and incorporate results into blog posts and website content to reinforce value you place in those who vote (see #5).

Guest Posts
When you ask someone to help out you prove how much you value others. Your community grows when its open to outside influence. Salesforce increased blog traffic by 1,000% when they asked for guest posts. Guest posts have high built in engagement too since the writer is sure to share with his/her social net.

Ambassadors
We are big believers in ASKING FOR HELP. Inside your traffic 1% wants to share high value UGC, 9% will vote and share that content too so find your 10% Ambassadors and ask for their help.

Testing for Engagement
We need new Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that value UGC, shares, likes and links. If your content is creating engagement double down. If not review these 10 tips and test something new. Make sure your "winner" metrics include KPIs that speak to core content marketing and engagement values such as time on site, shares, comments, likes and links.
