The New Rules of Talent Management

The New Rules of Talent Management | Leadership Advice & Tips | Scoop.it

You could say HR is going “agile lite,” applying the general principles without adopting all the tools and protocols from the tech world. It’s a move away from a rules- and planning-based approach toward a simpler and faster model driven by feedback from participants. This new paradigm has really taken off in the area of performance management. (In a 2017 Deloitte survey, 79% of global executives rated agile performance management as a high organizational priority.) But other HR processes are starting to change too.

In many companies that’s happening gradually, almost organically, as a spillover from IT, where more than 90% of organizations already use agile practices. At the Bank of Montreal (BMO), for example, the shift began as tech employees joined cross-functional product-development teams to make the bank more customer focused. The business side has learned agile principles from IT colleagues, and IT has learned about customer needs from the business. One result is that BMO now thinks about performance management in terms of teams, not just individuals. Elsewhere the move to agile HR has been faster and more deliberate. GE is a prime example. Seen for many years as a paragon of management through control systems, it switched to FastWorks, a lean approach that cuts back on top-down financial controls and empowers teams to manage projects as needs evolve.

How To Master the Art of Influence

How To Master the Art of Influence  | Leadership Advice & Tips | Scoop.it
As a product leader at Google and Reddit, Tyler Odean uses persuasion as a tool in his everyday job. Here's what he's learned through experience and research about being influential at work.

Via Daniel Watson
Chong Jiaxuan's comment, March 13, 2018 10:09 AM
According to Odean, success depends on whether you are able to persuade people to join you in your cause to create new and revolutionary things. I feel that this is true. Someone might have an extremely innovative idea, but no words to express himself. People would most likely scratch their heads in confusion by what this person says. However, another person may have a dumb idea, but package the idea so nicely that others think the idea is amazing. Although persuasion is such an important skill, schools do not educate students on how to be persuasive concisely. Instead, schools teach students to use windy evidences to strengthen their point. Using lengthy evidences will just confuse others and make them question you more. I feel that schools should also give some insights on how to have better speaking skills in order to persuade people easily. Such knowledge proves to be more useful for students when they grow up.

Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity (aka VUCA)  does require good leadership. But all of the DURT behaviors are important and should be practiced regardless of conditions. Trust as we know is important for robust engagement, clarity is important for  broad alignment, directness is important for superb execution and reliability is important in sustainable adaptation.  Leadership's purpose in VUCA situations and, in general, is to maintain and build effectiveness in achieving results; the DURT behaviors and other Purposeful Leadership  behaviors is at the heart of organizational success regardless of circumstances.

3 Things Companies Do to Build an Exceptional Culture

3 Things Companies Do to Build an Exceptional Culture | Leadership Advice & Tips | Scoop.it

Exceptional workplace doesn't happen by accident.  It starts with a clearly defined vision that includes the company's core values, a detailed description of what each of those values means on a day-to-day basis, and a system for measuring  whether or not the people in the organization are living those values.

I refer to this plan as a culture blueprint, and it's critical to the creation and scaling of your company's culture, just as an architect's plans are to the building of a skyscraper. Done correctly, it serves as a North Star to the senior management team as you hire and manage the company's workforce. Without it, you'll end up building something that's likely to collapse under its own weight.

Company culture is incredibly important ,and far too many companies fail to invest the time and resources to create a positive one.

...Do you have any other favorite things you say to your team each week?  Would love to hear from you!

PS - Live on Purpose!

Kudos's curator insight, April 4, 2014 1:48 PM

Some great advice. Simple rules to follow. I would print this out and hang it on your wall and bring it out before every group meeting to refresh what you need to cover.

That brings up another key point - when was the last time you had a team meeting. We all think we have meetings all the time but the truth is we do not have as many as we think we do or should.

Weekly, Bi-weekly, Monthly - what is the right frequency? Weekly is a good place to start but maybe you switch up the main purpose of the team meetings and make them mandatory.

We do monthly Team Talks - that allows everyone to communicate what is happening in their group / department and ask questions. Item #8 - Check.

We also do Lunch and Learns - that allows one person or a group /department to show off what they are thinking about or working on. Goo way to get the innovation ideas flowing - One more for #8 - double check.

Totally agree with doing a great job with on boarding - make a persons first day a great day. This is is a whole blog post on it's own. I also like sending good people off with some fanfare and a thank you. They are ambassadors for your company  thank you, good luck and farewell event to highlighting in a bigger meeting is a very good idea. #9 - Check, check.

The rest of the items - are leadership touch points to that should be communicated as often as possible - such as the events listed above. In fact, we believe that these communication should be free flowing and  a product like Kudos is designed  to help companies do that with a big dose of #7. Show your appreciation often and say thanks to people every week.

I call it leading out loud and doing it in structured ways will make people feel more connected to the company and one another. Transparency and honesty is a good thing - Your team  can handle the truth so keep them in the loop :)

If you ever wondered what those companies you admire so much do - that is pretty well it.

Cheers,

T

More urgent than ever. I have been noticing a change in CPAs in all walks of life (small practice, large firms, mid-market CFOs, public company finance/accounting teams) talking about the need for leadership at all levels. It goes way beyond the obvious need for succession planning. It seems to be driven by the accelerating change and complexity and need for people who can anticipate what's coming around the bend and help mobilize the organization to make the turns and adjust the sails as necessary. Thanks Don for sharing!

It takes a confident and humble leader to encourage their team to lead.  It means that the leader doesn't believe that they need to have all of the answers or the best ideas.  The right collaborative environment is the foundation with teams who are empowered to take decisions, and take the lead.

These type of leaders don't point fingers when mistakes are made...instead they take the bullet.  They give the recognition away, and the team has that spark of excitement, passion, and ownership.  They know that when the goal is achieved...their team did it on their own.

It is in human nature to look for negative in everything first. Most of the stories on the news are negative (after all, they draw the most attention).
Trish Sadar's insight:

Thank you Roy for sharing this article!

I personally am all in when it comes to tapping into our strengths as leaders.

I see the power, clarity, and confidence that leaders leverage when they know that they can leverage their strengths to help them achieve their goals.

Several of the leadership courses that we offer have used the Strengths Finder assessment together with their traditional 360 or replaced completely.

I particularly agree with the statement in the article:

Leadership is a privilege, not a right, and we need to treat it as such. Leadership means encouraging people to live up to their fullest potential and find the path they love. That, and only that, will create a strong culture and sustainable levels of innovation.

Please read the article to find out more about the ABCD of strength-based leadership.

Please do share with us your experiences with using Strengths Finder......Make it a great day!

Don Cloud's comment, August 29, 2013 12:31 AM
Seems so obvious that any organization of size does not need 1,000 copies of the same person with the same talent. After all, what kind of football team would you have if you tried to make all the players great quarterbacks?

What's required in any organization, business, industry, military unit is a collection of people with different talents/strengths energized towards a higher purpose. A good leader's purpose is to recruit, grow, and mobilize these diverse people with diverse talents to work together -- that's when the magic can happen ... when the impossible becomes the achievable ... when obstacles become things to be hurdled ... when setbacks become opportunities ... and when the total of the organization becomes more than the mere sum of its people parts.
