Trish Sadar's insight:

Growth doesn't just happen doing the same thing over and over again.

You definitely have to know yourself to grow yourself; the question is what can you do or learn or apply to become a better leader?

The most successful leaders have one thing in common...they are life-long learners.  They surround themselves with experts who can help them get to where they want to be faster.

What is your plan to develop yourself now?  You have to coach yourself before you can coach your team.

What is your plan to develop your people?  Are you as committed to their success as you expect them to be about you and the shared goals?

Please share with us what you are doing so we can all learn from eachother.

Why extroverts fail, introverts flounder and you probably succeed

Why extroverts fail, introverts flounder and you probably succeed | Leadership Advice & Tips | Scoop.it
The conventional view that extroverts make the best leaders has one teensy flaw: It’s probably not true.
Trish Sadar's insight:

Very interesting article!

My humble opinion is that whether you are an introvert or extrovert...building your emotional intelligence on your preferences is critical.

I have seen extroverts who have matured their emotional intelligence to the point that they are amazing listeners, because they have built those muscles.

Also, I have experienced introverted leaders who have strengthened their body language and abilities to speak before they have fully formulated their ideas as well.

Management Is (Still) Not Leadership - Bloomberg

Management Is (Still) Not Leadership
Bloomberg
A few weeks ago, the BBC asked me to come in for a radio interview.
Trish Sadar's insight:

Absolutely wonderful must-read article for all leaders!

Leadership is all about what is not written on your job description.  It is doing more than what is expected regarding the technical skills.

It is about being authentic, sharing the vision, communicating in a way that connects with others.  So that you can inspire others to believe in what they are doing, where you jointly are going, so that they believe and want to give their all to join the journey and really make a difference.

Are you a leader?

Anthony Alume's comment January 11, 2013 5:27 PM
I read a book called 'Who Gets Promoted Who Doesn't and Why" by Donald Asher. In the book, the author gives four position and in the those four positions are management and leadership. He gives a list of skill-sets to each of those position. For example, "Leaders can inspire and Managements can monitors the activities of others" is what I pulled from him. When I return to the statement, "People often think of "leadership" in terms of personality characteristics.", its wonderful that a person is charismatic but that's not going to inspire people but give them a temporary satisfaction. In answering your question, I would say, "no, I'm not a leader in my job".

Dear Anthony, Thank you so much for your insight! You better believe that I will be reading the book that you talked about. I agree with you that leadership is not about being charismatic. Rather, my humble opinion leaders are authentic. Leaders still have to excel at the technical skills. Anthony, can you offer any other must read leadership books?

Trish Sadar's insight:

Body Language is everything!

Okay, we have all taken on some body language habits that we may not even be aware of.  If you want to find out, ask those at home who know you best.  Then read a few  books to increase your knowledge on body language.

One book that I often recommend is:  What Every Body is Saying.

Trish Sadar's insight:

Wow, what a great reminder to us all as leaders.

Our words, actions, behaviors, gestures, and responses all leave imprints on our staff, and everyone around us.

Great comment from this article:  "Leaders must be aware that their actions, their words, their impact, their leadership leaves an impression, an imprint.  Either positive or negative.  An imprint just the same."

Conquering The Enemies of Innovation: Silence and Fear

Conquering The Enemies of Innovation: Silence and Fear | Leadership Advice & Tips | Scoop.it
What's the biggest impediment to innovation within an organization? Fear.

As early as 2004, research from Elizabeth Wolf Morrison and Frances J. Milliken for the Academy of Management Review and Stern Business pegged fear — and the resulting silence when employees operate within a culture of fear — as the biggest roadblock to innovation.

A recent survey by the Robert Half Group confirms that in 2012, the problem remains. What makes employees afraid?

Trish Sadar's insight:

Great article!  It is crucial that your executive team creates an enviornment where you leave titles at the door.  All leaders much be coachable, and willing and open to listen to ideas, observations, and suggestions.

When fear is present, innovation and new ideas from all levels are absent.

Trish Sadar's comment, January 19, 2013 10:23 AM
Dear Anne'Laure, I completely agree!!
