A new law requires K-12 schools to add media literacy to curriculum for English language arts, science, math and history-social studies.

"Media literacy can help change that, advocates believe, by teaching students how to recognize reliable news sources and the crucial role that media plays in a democracy. "

“The increase in Holocaust denial, climate change denial, conspiracy theories getting a foothold, and now AI … all this shows how important media literacy is for our democracy right now,” said Jennifer Ormsby, library services manager for the Los Angeles County Office of Education. “The 2016 election was a real eye-opener for everyone on the potential harms and dangers of fake news.”

The top 5 Education trends in 2023

The top 5 Education trends in 2023 | Help and Support everybody around the world | Scoop.it

The world is changing, which means that the way we study and learn in order to thrive in the world has to change, too. For a long time, education has involved us spending a good chunk of our early years sitting in a classroom absorbing information before heading out to put it to use. But the pace of change today means that what we learned one day might be redundant the next.

Not Just College
In 2023, high schools will increase resources dedicated to preparing students for future paths that lead to places other than traditional college courses. Vocational and technical courses teaching a diverse range of skill sets are likely to become more popular as schools work with employers to develop new solutions to problems caused by the skills gap. In the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics suggests that 43 percent of high school graduates go on to study at college. Nevertheless, a disproportionate amount of school resources are focused on preparing this minority group, while less teaching focuses on students who plan to continue their education in less traditional ways, such as apprenticeships or on-the-job training. As the demands of the new labor market shift away from seeking purely college-educated graduates and towards developing a workforce with the necessary skills, we can expect to see this change in the future. In Europe, 2023 has been designated the European Year of Skills. This recognizes that a focus on vocational education and training alongside traditional academic, subject-based training may be the key to developing new drivers of economic growth in the face of global slowdown or recession.

Education Meets the Metaverse: Reimagining the Future of Learning

Education Meets the Metaverse: Reimagining the Future of Learning  | Help and Support everybody around the world | Scoop.it

The learning industry has come a long way from the PC internet boom that gave rise to eLearning in the late 1990s. The second wave of mobile computing and social media ushered in microlearning through shorter, video-based learning on demand. Industry watchers are now suggesting that the third era of computing is upon us. Flat static pages on the PC and phone will be replaced by a metaverse of digital 3D spaces, where we interact as lifelike avatars. The metaverse is an embodied internet where you’re never alone. Unlike a Zoom call that is scheduled and disappears when you’re done, the metaverse is “always on” and affords social interactions with peers. This transition has profound implications for capability-building and learning.

What Does a 21st Century Classroom Look, Sound, and Feel Like? | Help and Support everybody around the world | Scoop.it

Part of a technology coach’s role these days is to convince teachers that their job description has changed. The industrial model of education is well past its expiration date, and the generation of students born today are going to graduate into a world that will look completely different than our own. In order to train 20th century teachers to reach the conceptual understandings required for 21st century education, school leaders and tech coaches need to focus on describing what this could be.

Here’s How To Find A Minute Of Mindfulness Anywhere

Here’s How To Find A Minute Of Mindfulness Anywhere | Help and Support everybody around the world | Scoop.it

Everyone’s mind wanders.

Mindfulness is paying attention to what’s happening in the present moment. So if you’re aware that your mind is wandering, you’re halfway to a successful mindfulness practice.

The other half of mindfulness is gently returning your attention back to the here and now. But this doesn’t mean you have to yank your misbehaving mind back to reality. Instead, think of it as a compassionate return to consciousness. Picture a feather on the ground, lifted up by a gust of wind and then floating back down to rest on the pavement.

Wandering. Awareness. Return.

Let's call this call this curator friend Cynthia. Cynthia wrote back, “Two other curators worked with me on this (and may join us!), so I can’t take full credit.” She asked that I instead reference her with the significantly less exciting descriptor, “one of the curators of this exhibition." She was understandably hesitant to get all the credit and wanted to make clear that there were other people involved with the exhibition. While accurate, the new version was far less descriptive and complimentary than what I’d suggested.

Ever zone out while someone is talking? Of course. We all do. The average human has an eight-second attention span. With electronic distractions competing for your time and an abundance of responsibilities at work, it makes listening attentively to someone else speak pretty difficult.

“We are living in a time when it’s more challenging to be consistently aware and intentional because so many things are demanding our attention. Our brains haven’t caught up to the technology that’s feeding them,” says Scott Eblin, author of Overworked and Overwhelmed: The Mindfulness Alternative. “The impact of this leaves people in a chronic condition of fight or flight.”

Metaverse Schooling: The Future of Distance Learning?

Metaverse Schooling: The Future of Distance Learning? | Help and Support everybody around the world | Scoop.it
In the metaverse, students and educators may be physically situated far from each other, but they will be together, and accountable, within the same virtual space. Distance learning in the metaverse will feel tangible again – and if a lesson involves observing or handling an object, students will be able to do that synchronously, instead of passing it around the classroom. Students in the metaverse will truly be able to learn by doing, making lessons more relatable and memorable. The time and money spent traveling to and from field trips can be greatly reduced. These metaverse experiences will make learning more efficient and engaging, and also more efficient. They’ll open the door to even more group collaboration and deeper exploration of the broader world than the physical classroom can be able to provide.

The Elegance of the Gray Area - Cult of Pedagogy @cultofpedagogy

The Elegance of the Gray Area - Cult of Pedagogy @cultofpedagogy | Help and Support everybody around the world | Scoop.it
I’ve spent a lot of years talking with and listening to some very smart people, and one thing I’ve noticed is that the people who are legitimate experts in their fields rarely spout off facts like they are the final word. Their assertions don’t back you into a corner or embarrass you into silence. Their delivery is often quieter. More nuanced. The smartest people in the world are least likely to have singular, one-note answers to difficult questions. They’re more likely to respond with “It depends,” and then, if you’re willing to stick around and listen, share ideas that take a little more time to develop.

And I want to take a moment to elevate that, because I believe that if we spend more time practicing this kind of thinking, if we honor the true elegance of that gray area, we’ll all be a lot better off.

After 100 Years of the Same Teaching Model It’s Time to Throw Out the Playbook

After 100 Years of the Same Teaching Model It’s Time to Throw Out the Playbook | Help and Support everybody around the world | Scoop.it
Time to Throw Out the Playbook In looking back at my parents’ education in the 1950s and 60s, and my own education in the 1990s and 2000s, I worry sometimes that despite the huge advances that we’ve seen in technology, not much has changed when it comes to how we view learning and how we design learning environments. The transmission model of education is still the name of the game, although in some circles there are signs of its erosion.

I would like to take you on a journey in this post, starting from the 1950s banking model (Freire, 1968) of instructional design, before comparing it to my own schooling experiences as a digital native at the turn of the century. Then, finally, I would like to share my vision for C21 learning, and propose some ways that we can move forward so that we are meeting the needs of today.

Five Techniques for Maintaining a Positive Mindset

Five Techniques for Maintaining a Positive Mindset | Help and Support everybody around the world | Scoop.it

My great-grandparents, Cleve and Zelma Carder, lost almost everything they owned during the Dust Bowl years. After losing their homestead and ranch, they packed what they could into a Conestoga Wagon and made the trek from Northern New Mexico to find work picking cotton in the fields of Oklahoma.

When my great-grandmother told me stories of those difficult times, it wasn't with bitterness or anger. She would laugh as she recalled her husband's refusal to remove her grand piano from their wagon, despite the fact that it weighed over 1000 pounds. Instead, the family would spend several hours digging the wagon free from the sand in the dried-up riverbeds that they crossed.

In the last years of her life, her strongest memories were not of her failures or disappointments but of the love and hope experienced within them.

I am grateful to her for helping me learn at an early age that we get to choose how we view our circumstances and how we let them affect our mindset.

Being A Geek: What It Really Means About You And 5 Ways To Leverage It

Being A Geek: What It Really Means About You And 5 Ways To Leverage It | Help and Support everybody around the world | Scoop.it

Geeks—the two of us might fit the profile. Yes we have tendencies to contemplate things that probably shouldn’t be contemplated. We question. We prod. We poke…at everything. And, we’ve been known to engage in long, seemingly meaningless conversations about random things like: “Is the love of curry a genetic disposition or a socially experiential acquisition?” Or, what is the real meaning of the word “of?” That’s a valid question, right? Or, is it just geeky?

Being geeky, according to research by Imgur, is actually cool in today’s world—especially among Millennials. In fact, 60% of the 83 million Millennials consider themselves geeks compared to just 38% of GenXers and Boomers. And, the study also shows that geeks are the trendsetters and influencers (84% of geeks say people look to them for advice while only 60% of non-geeks say they get asked for advice).

This is, of course, welcome news for all of us who happen to randomly know Peter Parker’s height and weight (yes, we’re referring to the fictional character who turns into Spiderman). But, more than that, it’s also welcome news for all of us who geek-out about our own work—passionately probing to innovate, improve, dissect, and lead others to the discovery of their best selves.

The Learning Factor's curator insight, April 20, 2017 6:52 PM

Being a geek used to create images of social misfits, and less than attractive personalities. But, not anymore. Geeks have become the global trendsetters and influencers. It’s a welcome message for many of us because if you focus your inner-geek on 5 distinct areas, success isn’t too far behind.
