En el ámbito de la investigación siempre se ha apostado por recurrir a bases de datos científicas de pago, abonando las instituciones educativas unas tasas por la licencia para su uso por parte de la comunidad científica. Sin embargo, existen numerosas bases de datos científicas, algunas más potentes que las comerciales, que la gran mayoría de los investigadores y profesorado universitario desconoce.

Web of Science aglutina sobre unos 170 millones de documentos, mientras que Scopus sobre 70 millones. Dimensions tiene 134 millones de documentos registrados y Base 321 millones de documentos, siendo la que más Google Schoolar con más de 350 millones de documentos. En España tenemos a Dialnet que es muy consultada por el alumnado universitario pero posee solamente 8 millones de registros.
