Within the last twenty years, the advent of portable technology and social media platforms is changing what took 60,000 years to evolve," Mitch Prinstein, the chief science officer at the American Psychological Association (APA), told the Senate Judiciary Committee this week. "We are just beginning to understand how this may impact youth development."

Humans are social creatures, and we learn through social interaction. In fact, said Prinstein, "numerous studies have revealed that children's interactions with peers have enduring effects on their occupational status, salary, relationship success, emotional development, mental health, and even on physical health and mortality over 40 years later. These effects are stronger than the effects of children's IQ, socioeconomic status, and educational attainment." This helps explain why social media platforms have grown so big in a relatively short period of time. But is the kind of social interaction they offer healthy?

El uso del móvil y las TRIC entre las y los adolescentes españoles está claramente generalizado desde edades tempranas, aunque en muchos casos se trata de un uso intensivo y sin supervisión, lo que puede derivar en frecuentes problemas de convivencia.

Aplicaciones y redes sociales forman parte del día a día de las nuevas generaciones. Ser capaces de integrarlas de forma armónica en su desarrollo personal y social es, sin duda, un enorme desafío.

La falta de conocimiento sobre algunos de los peligros, así como de medidas preventivas para evitarlos, pueden poner en serio riesgo a muchos adolescentes.

Las redes sociales han causado un profundo impacto en nuestra sociedad, para bien y para mal. Nos conectan, nos entretienen y, por desgracia, nos perjudican. Aunque disfrutamos de sus placeres, no podemos ignorar sus posibles daños. Hay mucho en juego: desde nuestra salud mental, hasta la integridad de nuestras elecciones.
“Unknown Influence”, Mozilla explora estos riesgos mediante los análisis y las interrogantes de investigadores y expertos en tecnología.  Está claro que debemos averiguar más sobre los riesgos inherentes a las redes sociales, si es que vamos a hacer algo para mitigarlos.
