Alex Usher captures an item of significance in UBC's new strategic plan. "Under Draft Strategies for Transformative Learning (page 14) it says: ”Reframe undergraduate academic program design in competencies rather than credit hours: we will move towards competencies as a primary metric of program structure and completion." I think this is areflection of a wider trend. Usher advocates caution. "Trying to move an entire major institution from one system to another in one go is like trying to do wheelies in a Sherman tank." Actually it's not that hard tp pop a wheelie in a tank; you just have to be going fast enough (pictured). Via Miloš Bajčetić

This article was a quick read that introduced scaffolding strategies to improve literacy skills. Some of the strategies I have implemented and can attest to their value. Others are new to me and provide some ideas that I can try in the near future. I have heard of both Boom cards and Flipgrid but have not actually investigated them to implement. This will become a small goal for the near future.

For each student, demystification begins with a direct and open conversation about the learning disabilities that brought them to Churchill. This dialogue continues throughout the student’s time here, and is something they carry on with them to high school, college, and their careers. These informal conversations between students, faculty, and parents are supplemented by formal demystification curriculum, which includes one-on-one and class discussions, literature, and student presentations. ts is very important to:
-Talk about why you struggle with certain tasks and what is different about the way your brain works Identifying your strengths, including things you are good at inside and outside the classroom -Identify a weakness, or something that is hard for you Developing a list of strategies for overcoming specific challenges Identifying a list of allies who can help you through a challenge |
