In a paper published in Nature Mental Health, Northeastern psychology professor Susan Whitfield-Gabrieli advises policy makers to consider turning to the low-cost, readily available practice of mindfulness meditation to change brain activity associated with mental illness.

This is a nice site where you can select a city and then watch a virtual walk around the city. The video quality is very good, and you can also have the sound on. Great to get students taking walks and then telling their peers what they saw and where they went.

Hace ahora un año, a raíz de un curso para tutores y tutoras al que asistí, escribí una entrada sobre la resiliencia, esa “capacidad para resistir y recuperarse ante circunstancias adversas, bien de carácter personal o social” que puede entrenarse y conviene hacerlo (Echaniz Barrondo, 2023). Es importante en todos los ámbitos de nuestra vida y en todas las edades. Incluso se empieza a hablar de empresas y organizaciones resilientes. “La gestión de la resiliencia en el trabajo, en sus múltiples formas, es imprescindible para transitar a través de las complejidades y los desafíos imprevistos del paisaje laboral contemporáneo y futuro. La proactividad en la construcción y gestión de una empresa resiliente se perfila, por lo tanto, como un pilar fundamental para el éxito y la sostenibilidad de las empresas en la era post-pandémica y más allá” (Comas Forgas y Arenas, 2023).

"In addition to pushing for generative AI’s embrace, Boston University’s task force also made several other recommendations, including that instructors should be free to define policies that are 'suited to the learning goals of their courses.' It says the university should also require that every instructor include an AI policy on each course syllabus."

However, as I’ve explored in previous posts on the capabilities and limitations of GenAI, I firmly believe that this technology is fundamentally unsuited for high-stakes student assessment. At its core, GenAI generates probabilistic outputs based on patterns in training data, lacking true understanding and the ability to make qualitative judgments. This leads to inconsistency and bias in grading, raising serious concerns about fairness and reliability.

The use of AI in grading also raises a host of ethical and equity issues. As I wrote in “Generative AI doesn’t ‘democratize creativity’“, the notion that AI levels the playing field is often an illusion. In reality, relying on AI for grading may exacerbate existing inequities and privilege certain groups of students over others.

In this post, I’ll go deeper into the reasons why I believe GenAI should not be used for grading, drawing on recent experiments and real-world examples. I’ll also explore the potential risks and unintended consequences of AI-powered assessment. By the end, I hope to convince you that, despite the temptation, GenAI is a dead-end when it comes to evaluating student work.

La profesión docente ha sido históricamente una de las más valoradas y respetadas en la sociedad. Los educadores han sido vistos como mentores, formadores, transmisores de conocimientos, desempeñando un papel fundamental en el desarrollo intelectual y personal de generaciones enteras. Sin embargo, en las últimas décadas, la percepción y las expectativas sobre la labor docente han cambiado de manera evidente y constante, convirtiéndose en un ámbito donde se enfrentan expectativas a veces descontextualizadas por un lado, y realidades complejas por otro.

Ayer me di cuenta que había amanecido cuando abrí uno de mis ojos y observé que un rayo de luz entraba entre uno de los huecos de la persiana de la ventana. Tampoco me preocupó… Me quise desperezar, pero tampoco tenía prisa, y me di cuenta que no la tenía porque no había sonado en mi teléfono la canción One moment in time, de Whitney Houston, la cual me advierte cada mañana de un nuevo día.Fue entonces cuando, tras dar una vuelta en la cama y aun sin abrir los ojos, estiré mi pierna y me di cuenta que ¡él estaba allí! Dejé a un lado la almohada y me agarré fuertemente a él.¡Demasiadas emociones! Entonces, ¡caí! Nos habíamos tomado unos días en y despertaba el en un delicioso dormitorio que no era nuestro hogar y a no pocos kilómetros del mismo.
