Group Work Doesn't Have to Be Awful - John Spencer @spencerideas

Group Work Doesn't Have to Be Awful - John Spencer @spencerideas | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"I don't enjoy collaboration. My natural inclination is to generate an idea and let it swirl in my head for awhile until I eventually have a clear picture of what I want to create. Then, I set specific deadlines and get to work. It's only when I get stuck that I reach out to others. Call it selfishness or call it introversion, but it's where I am most content.

And yet . . .

Over the last few years, I have grown to love collaborative work. I can always tell that genuine collaboration is happening because the group work no longer feels like work. In these moments, I can sense that I am creating something as a team that I would never be able to accomplish on my own."

Lessons Learned as a Maker Educator – Medium

Lessons Learned as a Maker Educator – Medium | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

It’s tough to be amazed when everyone in the class is churning out the same project. Conversely, I’ve found it impossible to not be constantly amazed by the work students do when given choice and the opportunity to create something new! One of the most rewarding experiences for me is to see the moment when the synapses fire and a student suddenly sees something that hadn’t been there before.

Is creative work REALLY worth the time in the classroom? Ditch That Textbook

Is creative work REALLY worth the time in the classroom? Ditch That Textbook | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
It’s a fair question. I’ve heard similar questions to this at teaching conferences, in discussions and versions of it on social media.

I’ve even thought it myself.

“This creative work takes a lot of time. Does it really give a return on all of that investment?

There’s plenty of evidence that points to YES … and it’s a skill that kids will need for the world they’ll face in the future.

STEM LEGO Challenge Cards

STEM LEGO Challenge Cards | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

I have the best job. Ever. Just putting that out there now. Today, with my little mini STEM group, we just sat and played with LEGO for an hour and half. I tipped out the whole box on my floor and we played, talked, and created together. Absolute bliss. There was obviously some learning taking place though. Secret learning that the kids didn’t even know about!
