The Library Voice: Is There A Place For Music In Our Makerspaces? Shannon Miller @ShannonMMiller

The Library Voice: Is There A Place For Music In Our Makerspaces? Shannon Miller @ShannonMMiller | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
I spend a lot of time thinking about Makerspaces.

These engaging spaces that bring creativity, tinkering, and exploration to our communities make me push the possibilities and potential of what these spaces and experiences can bring to our young people.

For me it is fun to think about all of the different elements we can add to our Makerspaces.

There can be duck tape, 3D printers, art supplies, recycled goods, old computer parts, wood, Makey Makey kits, Sphero’s, knitting needles and yarn, LEGO’s, playdough, wood, hot glue guns, fabric, paper, wire, and the list goes on and on.

Now think about this.

Ask yourself….

If You Want to Accelerate Brain Development in Children, Teach Them Music

If You Want to Accelerate Brain Development in Children, Teach Them Music | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Music, the universal language of mood, emotion and desire, connects with us through a wide variety of neural systems.

We now know from controlled treatment/outcome studies that listening to and playing music is a potent treatment for mental health issues. 400 published scientific papers have proven the old adage that “music is medicine.” In fact, research demonstrates that adding music therapy to treatment improves symptoms and social functioning among schizophrenics. Further, music therapy has demonstrated efficacy as an independent treatment for reducing depression, anxiety and chronic pain.

Importantly, music education also appears to accelerate brain development in young children, particularly in the areas of the brain responsible for processing sound, language development, speech perception and reading skills, according to initial results of a five-year study by USC neuroscientists.

Listening and playing music is a great treatment for mental illness.

This is suitable for both major and indie labels.

Madelyn Perry's comment, February 20, 2022 2:41 PM
This article talks about the importance of exposing music to children at an early age because it increases their brain development and can have a positive impact as they get older. The author explains a study that multiple professors conducted on kids around 7-8 years old and exposed them to musical training for two years compared to kids with no musical training, but exposed to a different extra-curricular activity. The results showed in a cat scan that the kids who had musical training for two years had more brain development and growth compared to the other group of kids with a different activity. This article is very interesting and resourceful because the author had a guest writer and included many resourceful names that conducted the study on the kids and had very important results.

Want more girls interested in STEM? Retrain music and dance teachers to run computer science lessons, say educators

Want more girls interested in STEM? Retrain music and dance teachers to run computer science lessons, say educators | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Music and dance teachers who are respected by female pupils should be trained to teach computer science to inspire more girls to pursue a career in the technology sector, educators have said.

More than 150 teachers and schoolgirls recently attended an event at Microsoft’s UK headquarters designed to show young women what life at a technology company was like.

Speaking just weeks after the Government used its Budget to announce significant funding to support the training of Computer Science teachers, Cindy Rose, the chief executive of Microsoft UK, kicked off this year’s DigiGirlz by highlighting the lack of women in the technology sector.

Educators told Microsoft at the event that school leaders needed to create more positive role models in computer science and give them modern classrooms to work in if the UK was to encourage more women to pursue a career in science, engineering, technology or maths (STEM).
Monica S Mcfeeters's curator insight, December 11, 2017 1:19 PM

Curious article from Microsoft. Convincing successful dancers and Musically talented women to covertly convert talent into computer and scienc geeks may not be a winning argument guys....This article shows the limits of the male mind to comprehend the mind and motivations of others. Now the STEAM or just STEM debate may be worth bringing up if Microsoft can show how developing programs and engineering for those creative fields opens creative doors and how creative thinking and skills open door for enginneeering teams?

This is rescooped via iPads,  MakerEd and More in Education giving twelve Mac recording applications formulated to assist music instructors teach digital audio recording, writing and mixing songs right on your Mac.
Although these editing applications are great learning tools,  easy to use and have mastered sound libraries, I found them to be very hard or impossible to convert with little to no compatibility with audio industry standard equipment.
Educatorstechnology.com is a site containing teaching tools used for educational purposes making it a reliable source for audio industry professionals.

Josh Corley's curator insight, December 14, 2019 6:25 PM
For the most part, I would agree with the apps specified as good for music teachers. Although, it could be integrated to fewer apps, considering the main function of some of them are available in other apps on this list. For example, DM1-The Drum Machine is on this list, but several of the apps have drum machines imbedded in them. Some of theses apps are no longer available, showing the lack of longevity amongst many apps created for the purpose of creating music. This article was originally created by educatorstechnology.com, and as far as credibility goes, this article is completely opinionated. The website is powered by “Blogger,” and fails to provide any reparable resources as being fully reliable. Needless to say, it is not a major source of information for Audio Industry Professionals.

I've had my own experience with a few of these apps! Recommending GarageBand if you have an ear for creating your on jams. You can create an entire song with GarageBand. It can be tricky when buying beats from other people when you want to write your own music and have the rights to everything.

This free course can teach you music programming basics in less than an hour

This free course can teach you music programming basics in less than an hour | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Ableton, A Berlin-based music software company, just released a free interactive music course that runs right in your browser.
One thing that immediately struck me about their web app was how well it was built. For example, if you change the tab, the music will fade out, then fade back in when you return. And if you start one sequencer, then scroll down and start another sequencer, it will automatically pause the first one.
It also has fun, easy to understand interfaces for programming music.

Innovate My School - 4 ways to make music lessons 'sing' with iPads

Innovate My School - 4 ways to make music lessons 'sing' with iPads | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
As with any tool, the outcomes are only as good as the planning that you put in. You can teach fantastic lessons with or without an iPad. Unfortunately, you can also teach awful lessons with or without an iPad. This is just as true in Music as it is in other subjects.

Perhaps, however, Music teachers have an advantage. While other subject teachers are more accustomed to books, videos and websites as resources, Music teachers are accustomed to using a much wider gamut of tools - instruments. If we can encourage Music teachers to view the iPad as another instrument and a vehicle by which children can make genuinely music progress, then we are well on the way to making the most of this 21st century resource.

So, how can music teachers deliver real learning with the Apple iPad?

Want to 'train your brain'? Forget apps, learn a musical instrument

Want to 'train your brain'? Forget apps, learn a musical instrument | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"While brain training games and apps may not live up to their hype, it is well established that certain other activities and lifestyle choices can have neurological benefits that promote overall brain health and may help to keep the mind sharp as we get older. One of these is musical training. Research shows that learning to play a musical instrument is beneficial for children and adults alike, and may even be helpful to patients recovering from brain injuries.

“Music probably does something unique,” explains neuropsychologist Catherine Loveday of the University of Westminster. “It stimulates the brain in a very powerful way, because of our emotional connection with it.”

Playing a musical instrument is a rich and complex experience that involves integrating information from the senses of vision, hearing, and touch, as well as fine movements, and learning to do so can induce long-lasting changes in the brain. Professional musicians are highly skilled performers who spend years training, and they provide a natural laboratory in which neuroscientists can study how such changes – referred to as experience-dependent plasticity – occur across their lifespan."

Garage Band is an excellent program for the classroom. I have found that it develops social and personal capability in students without requiring a lot of skill. With so many different tracks, recordings, beats to choose from students can put together a whole song (that sounds great!) just on the computer. It makes them feel like a music producer. The end product is so satisfying for students. You can upload your creations using the Garage Band app to other platforms - Facebook, Soundcloud or Youtube. Students could create an online portfolio of music they have produced using Garage Band.
Liam Richards's curator insight, June 1, 2017 4:00 AM
I'll have to try a few of these - I personally have used 'GuitarToolkit' consistently for years now; both as a musician and an educator. The simplicity of Garage Band makes it a fantastic educational tool.
Via Saturn's comment, June 3, 2017 11:46 PM
Thats a great idea. Garage band is awesome. You could also let students focus on one instrument each and get them to collaborate on tracks. These could be uploaded on the cloud for students to track the progress and then used as samples for others in the future.
