7 Ways to Get Teens Reading in a Smartphone Culture | EdSurge News

7 Ways to Get Teens Reading in a Smartphone Culture | EdSurge News | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
One evening last week, I collapsed into bed after homework was finished, lunches were packed, and bedtime stories were read and happened upon an impassioned Los Angeles Times op-ed by high school political science teacher Jeremy Adams. In it, Adams decries his students’ lack of interest in reading and places the blame squarely on smartphones. My kids are still young, but I’m always thinking of how to instill in them a passion for books, so I read on...on my smartphone.

Take a break from your smartphone - CNET

Take a break from your smartphone - CNET | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Vacation used to be a time to relax and recharge. But now that you can get Wi-Fi at 35,000 feet, cell service in the middle of the ocean and international data plans, it's much harder to get away from all that.

But studies show that being connected 24/7 can take its toll on our physical and emotional health. The blue light from our screens can sabotage a good night's sleep, and social media obsession can cause depression.

You can’t buy an ethical smartphone today - Engadget

You can’t buy an ethical smartphone today - Engadget | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
It all started with a WhatsApp message from my friend, an environmental campaigner who runs a large government sustainability project. She's the most ethical person I know and has always worked hard to push me, and others, into making a more positive impact on the world. Always ahead of the curve, she steered me clear of products containing palm oil, as well as carbon-intensive manufacturing and sweatshop labor.

That day, she wanted my opinion on what smartphone she should buy, but this time requested an ethical device. Until now, she's been an HTC loyalist, but wanted to explore the options for something better and more respectable. My default response was the Fairphone 2, which is produced in small quantities by a Dutch startup, but I began to wonder -- that can't be the only phone you can buy with a clear conscience, can it?

Is our smartphone addiction damaging our children? | Rowan Davies

Is our smartphone addiction damaging our children? | Rowan Davies | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Astudy published by the journal Child Development has taken a look at how parents’ use of technology affects their children’s behaviour, and has concluded that “technology-based interruptions in parent–child interactions” – a phenomenon known as “technoference”, which I’m fairly sure was a club night in Stockwell in the 1990s – could be associated with a greater incidence of poor behaviour on the part of children.

Almost half (48%) of the parents in the study admitted to three daily incidents of technoference in their interactions with their kids, and the researchers say that these seem to correlate with young children being more prone to whining, sulking, restlessness, frustration and outbursts of temper. (Coincidentally, these are also the behaviours displayed by adults who are confronted with slow wifi.)

Gestures are the best way to #navigate your #smartphone—here's how to start #swiping - Popular Science | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"If you want to navigate your smartphone at top speed, single-finger tapping just won't cut it. As device manufacturers ditch physical buttons for huge, bezel-free screens, specific hand gestures have become vital shortcuts for powering through emails, notifications, maps, and more."

If the Russian psychologist Ivan Pavlov were alive today, what would he say about smartphones? He might not think of them as phones at all, but instead as remarkable tools for understanding how technology can manipulate our brains.

Pavlov’s own findings — from experiments he did more than a century ago, involving food, buzzers and slobbering dogs — offer key insights into why our phones have become almost an extension of our bodies, modern researchers say. The findings also provide clues to how we can break our dependence.

How I added four hours of battery life to my smartphone every day for free - USA Today

How I added four hours of battery life to my smartphone every day for free - USA Today | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
I’ve had big-time battery drain issues on my last three iPhones. I just figured it was my fault — maybe I’m too addicted to apps, take too many photos, or just use my phone too much?

It’s an issue I’ve gone to Apple for help with many times. But the Genius’s — Apple's retail support — were flummoxed, too. After the typical troubleshooting: Update iOS? Check. Adjust screen brightness? Check. Use Wi-Fi when possible, turn off location services, and tone down notifications? Check, check, and check again. Nothing seems to solve the issues. Maybe I got the phone wet?

It was time to kick things up to the next level. I enlisted experts like Scotty Loveless, a former Apple Genius and iOS tech who told me this would not be another, “turn off every useful feature of iOS posts…” because those “really grind my gears.” Finally, someone speaking my language!

With that said, here’s how I finally beat the worst of my battery battles — and now you can, too.
