#HR Design Thinking is Never Enough

#HR Design Thinking is Never Enough | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it
Design thinking has become such a hot topic amongst L&D and innovation teams at large companies that one would think executives see it as their silver bullet solution to their innovation woes (that, or it’s a way for them to be seen to be investing in innovation and providing a creative outlet for their millennial staffers).

Whatever the case, over 80% of new product launches at large companies fail and it’s because, as Michael Dell famously put it, “ideas are a commodity, execution of them is not”.

The same holds true in the startup world where 95% of startups fail, usually due to market failure stemming from botched execution.

While design thinking is indeed an incredibly powerful ideation and prototyping tool that I use with my team and with clients, it is but one of many pieces to the corporate innovation puzzle.

It alone won’t deliver any value beyond temporarily galvanizing employees and delivering some chemical reactions.

#HR Design Thinking: What It Is (And How To Implement It Into Your Business) | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

Design thinking ultimately comes down to starting with a set of objectives and passionately exploring how to develop a solution based on those goals. While this approach is becoming popular in the business world (particularly the startup world), it’s incredibly difficult to implement. Unless you invest in educating your staff, getting managers on board and…

One of the things I’ve been doing for years is using Design Thinking to get greater understanding and adoption when doing any analytics project. It focused the analysis and delivered actionable insights to the right person and in the right way faster than any other method. Recently, I decided to see if I could find some good examples of this approach being used at other companies and, to my delight, I found some excellent examples where, intentional or not, some fabulous companies and teams are using this to get high value results.

#HR There’s no #innovation agenda without design thinking - Globe and Mail | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it
Never have design thinking, design practice and creative skills been as important to Canada’s future as they are now. Today, competitive success is determined by the ability to understand human needs and desires and to deliver richly imagined ways of addressing them. Many organizations recognize the importance of innovation, but they don’t know how to achieve it. The answer is design.

Designers allow companies to stay ahead of their customers by anticipating and addressing human needs and behaviours in a complex and changing world. Technology needs to be intentionally designed for and with people. Design creates the experience of a product, system or service, the individual, social and cultural experience, and the value and the impact it has. Design is the bridge between raw invention and application.

The essence of design thinking involves empathizing deeply, listening to people and observing them to identify tough problems to address or new opportunities to explore. Design thinking marries systems analysis with outcomes-oriented problem solving. It’s relevant to the development and enhancement of services, products and business methods. It’s as applicable to large companies as it is to startups and non-profits.

5 Stages in the Design Thinking Process

Design Thinking is a design methodology that provides a solution-based approach to solving problems. It’s extremely useful in tackling complex problems that are ill-defined or unknown, by understanding the human needs involved, by re-framing the problem in human-centric ways, by creating many ideas in brainstorming sessions, and by adopting a hands-on approach in prototyping and testing. Understanding these five stages of Design Thinking will empower anyone to apply the Design Thinking method

Design thinking as a strategy: How understanding innovation creates innovation

Design thinking as a strategy: How understanding innovation creates innovation | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it
Business strategies – especially in the tradition sense – are rather pushy. If you have a product, your strategy is to explain why a customer should use it.

Design thinking as a strategy flips this. Instead of forcing a product on customers, instead, it sees things from the customer’s perspective. A design mindset is not problem-focused, it is solution focused and action-oriented towards creating a preferred future. Design Thinking draws upon logic, imagination, intuition, and systemic reasoning – exploring the possibilities of what could be. This train of thought creates desired outcomes benefiting the end user.

When design principles are applied to strategy and innovation the success rate for innovation dramatically improves.
