The logistics giant Maersk will order eight new ocean-going ships that will use only carbon-neutral fuels to hit its net-zero goal by 2050. While it will be a more expensive endeavor than traditional vessels that run on fossil fuels, it is in line with what its customers want. They include: Amazon, Disney, H&M Group, HP Inc., Levi Strauss & Co., Microsoft, Novo Nordisk, The Procter and Gamble Company, PUMA, Schneider Electric, Signify, Syngenta, and Unilever. More than half of Maersk’s 200 largest customers have set – or are setting – ambitious science-based or zero-carbon targets for their supply chains.

The recently concluded United Nations Climate Conference (COP26) brought supply chain sustainability into the forefront once again. To keep global warming within 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius, global emissions must be cut by 7.6% each year till 2030. The transportation and logistics industry, which contributes 17% to global greenhouse gas emissions, has a pivotal role to play in keeping global warming under check. By focusing on sustainability, logistics can empower enterprises to reduce their carbon footprint and prove to be a game-changer in battling climate change. In its 2021 State of Supply Chain Sustainability report, the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics defines supply chain sustainability as the management of environmental and social impacts within and across networks consisting of suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, and customers in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

With businesses being increasingly urged to reduce their carbon emissions and adopt more sustainable business models, the logistics and transportation industry is under tremendous pressure to follow suit, and for good reason. According to the Sustainable Freight Buyers Alliance (SBFA), freight transport accounts for 8 per cent of global CO2 emissions. By 2050, direct CO2 emissions from the logistics sector is set to rise by 42 per cent. The alliance, a bridge between freight buyers and freight decarbonisation initiatives to support the industry’s transition to net-zero freight transport, states that decarbonising freight transport is critical to achieving the global goals of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
