Samskip Leads the Way in Sustainability with New Green Shipping Initiative

Samskip Leads the Way in Sustainability with New Green Shipping Initiative | Supply chain News and trends | Scoop.it
Samskip, a prominent green shipping organization, has initiated a new project aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from its vessels. The Carbon Capture and Utilization system developed by Samskip captures 30% of the CO2 emissions produced by combustion engines in real time. Then, the system stores the emissions in portable batteries, thus offering an environmentally sustainable solution for the shipping industry.

The portable batteries can be delivered to clients, such as agricultural businesses and greenhouses, which require CO2 to promote growth in their products. By providing these clients with captured CO2, the need for gas-powered machinery can be eliminated, resulting in a reduction in natural gas usage.

How the shipping industry is now sailing towards net-zero

How the shipping industry is now sailing towards net-zero | Supply chain News and trends | Scoop.it
The shipping industry aims to align with a 1.5 degrees Celsius trajectory in accordance with the Paris Agreement, this requires that zero-emission fuels make up 5% of international shipping fuels by 2030.
Shipping’s 2030 breakthrough target rests on an increased supply of technology, mobilisation of finance, supportive policy measures, aggregated demand for scaleable zero-emission fuels and an equitable approach that ensures a truly global transition.
Actively tracking the industry’s progress towards 5% will help identify current gaps and challenges to inspire action.

International organisations join forces to help shipowners meet recycling regulations

International organisations join forces to help shipowners meet recycling regulations | Supply chain News and trends | Scoop.it
The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and BIMCO, together with the International Ship Suppliers’ Association (ISSA) and the International HazMat Association (IHMA), have collaborated to develop a new guide to help both shipowners and ship suppliers comply with new ship recycling regulations.

As informed, the new guidelines will help the shipping companies to comply with both the current EU Ship Recycling Regulations (EUSRR) and the Hong Kong Convention on Ship Recycling (HKC) where ratification is anticipated next year.

Under both sets of regulations, the shipowner must develop and maintain an Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) for each vessel they own. In support of this, ship suppliers must provide material declarations (MDs) and Supplier’s Declarations of Conformity (SDoC) for equipment delivered to the ship.
