Sustainable IT: An environmental and social approach to business tech

Sustainable IT: An environmental and social approach to business tech | Supply chain News and trends | Scoop.it
Sustainable or green IT is not new. In fact, it has been a topic of discussion among IT leaders for decades. But the concept of sustainability in general, which the United Nations defines as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” is something people and organizations are prioritizing more than ever — and for good reason.

Concerns about the environment and climate change are front and center among world leaders, environmental advocacy groups, and society at large. Corporate executives and boards want their organizations to do their part — or at least be perceived as doing their part — to help.

The push for better environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives has taken a high priority at many organizations, and this encompasses more efficient uses of technology.

UN Plastic Treaty To Tackle Production, Packaging Design | Supply chain News and trends | Scoop.it
United Nations negotiators have agreed a roadmap for a global plastic treaty that would address plastic production and design, according to a draft resolution seen by Reuters, in what delegates said was a key step to agreeing an ambitious deal.

UN member states are meeting this week in Nairobi to agree plans for the first global agreement to tackle plastic pollution, a soaring environmental crisis that is destroying marine habitats and contaminating the food chain.

UN urged to create treaty on plastic pollution

UN urged to create treaty on plastic pollution  | Supply chain News and trends | Scoop.it
More than 70 leading businesses including the H&M Group, IKEA, Inditex and Zalando have called for a legally binding treaty on plastic pollution.

The idea – which has been backed by two thirds of the United Nations’ Member States – comes ahead of this year’s UN Environment Assembly (UNEA), which many believe would provide an opportune time to establish a single, consolidated framework for companies and investors to support.

Marco Lambertini, international director of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), said: “We need a transformation in ambition and action in how we make, use and reuse plastic. It is no longer a question of whether we need a treaty on plastic pollution, it’s more about what this treaty must look like in order to tackle today’s still rampant plastic pollution crisis.”

Gold sourcing and Switzerland in focus at the Human Rights Council

Gold sourcing and Switzerland in focus at the Human Rights Council | Supply chain News and trends | Scoop.it
Last week, a special rapporteur investigating the use of mercury in small-scale gold mining and a UN fact-finding mission on Venezuela presented separate reports to the council on the impact of gold mining on many communities and the environment, particularly in the Amazon basin.

UN investigators cited human rights abuses such as sexual exploitation of women and children, mercury poisoning and child labour affecting communities where illegal gold production occurs, and pointed the finger at the responsibility of countries buying the metal.

The reports said global buyers such as Switzerland – through which roughly two-thirds of global trade transits – need to ensure that human rights are respected throughout supply chains.
