JBS Generates Energy From Methane, Reduces CO2 Emissions

JBS Generates Energy From Methane, Reduces CO2 Emissions | Supply chain News and trends | Scoop.it
JBS has announced the installation of biodigesters to provide a new outlet for the methane gas emitted in its industrial operations – the production of biogas, a renewable and clean energy source.

Environmental Footprint
The first phase of the initiative covers the group's nine Friboi units and reduces the business's scope 1 emissions by 65%, representing a reduction of 24.6% in scope 1 emissions across all JBS activities in Brazil.

With a R$ 54 million (€10.2 million) investment, this is the largest project of its kind in Brazil's protein industry, reducing the environmental footprint of its production process.

Deal reached on EU law regulating CO2 removals from forestry, land use

Deal reached on EU law regulating CO2 removals from forestry, land use | Supply chain News and trends | Scoop.it
The European Parliament and EU member states reached an agreement late on Thursday (10 November) on a new law regulating the contribution of the forestry and land use sector to the EU’s 2030 climate goals.

The land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) sector covers the use of soils, trees, plants, biomass and timber and is responsible for emitting and absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere.

Under the political agreement reached yesterday, the EU will aim to remove 310 million tonnes of net CO2 equivalent from LULUCF sectors by 2030.

“CO2 carbon sinks can help us achieve our climate goals, including carbon neutrality, and thus protecting our planet from the fatal negative consequences of climate change,” said Marian Jurečka, the Czech minister of the environment whose country currently holds the EU’s rotating six-month presidency.

“At the same time, the deal ensures different circumstances in each member state are taken into account when setting further ambition towards the 2030 targets,” Jurečka said in a statement.

Samskip Leads the Way in Sustainability with New Green Shipping Initiative

Samskip Leads the Way in Sustainability with New Green Shipping Initiative | Supply chain News and trends | Scoop.it
Samskip, a prominent green shipping organization, has initiated a new project aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from its vessels. The Carbon Capture and Utilization system developed by Samskip captures 30% of the CO2 emissions produced by combustion engines in real time. Then, the system stores the emissions in portable batteries, thus offering an environmentally sustainable solution for the shipping industry.

The portable batteries can be delivered to clients, such as agricultural businesses and greenhouses, which require CO2 to promote growth in their products. By providing these clients with captured CO2, the need for gas-powered machinery can be eliminated, resulting in a reduction in natural gas usage.
