The science and spirituality of mindfulness

The science and spirituality of mindfulness | Meditation Practices | Scoop.it
The nature of consciousness is a subject of enormous interest to both science and religion. Modern, secular mindfulness techniques have their foundation in ancient Buddhist thought, but it's only recently that neuroscientists have given serious attention to what actually happens in the brain when we meditate.

Dr Sara Lazar is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and leads the Lazar lab for Meditation Research at Massachusetts General hospital. She is one of the world's leading researchers into the impact of mindfulness techniques on the brain, and has been a yoga and meditation practitioner since 1994.

The Venerable Thubten Dondrub is resident teacher at Buddha House in Adelaide and has been an international teacher with the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition for nearly 50 years.

A recent Financial Times article shares that some executives are bringing meditation and mindfulness into their companies.

For the past ten years, mindfulness in business has become more mainstream.  First within Google and General Mills -- and now within the finance world.

As stated by  vice-chairman of BlackRock and a former head of Swiss National Bank, “In a world of screens, texts, cell phones, and information all over you, spending 20 minutes purposefully not thinking of anything is a wonderful thing.  It's a pause that refreshes.”

Mindfulness meditation has become a mainstream technique in the toolkit of psychologists, but its efficacy in non-clinical settings is unclear. The BioSync Team's curator insight, January 14, 2014 11:10 AM

From the Article:  While Quiet Time is no panacea, it's a game-changer for many students who otherwise might have become dropouts. That's reason enough to make meditation a school staple, and not just in San Francisco.

How do spiritual practices transform what we typically think of as being secular spaces?  Fascinating.  And, who are "spriitual practices" for?  I love how the assumptions of the article/research busts open yet another pardigm!
